Influencia De La Edad Y De La Preparacion Psicologica En Ninos Sometidos a Cirugia (the Influence of Age and Psychological Preparation on Children Entering Surgery). International Journal of Early Childhood, v23 n2 p39-49 Dec 1991 A study confirmed the notion that preparing a child psychologically for surgery benefits not only the child but also the entire medical process. The study also confirmed significant statistical reduction of fear resulting from the effectiveness of psychological preparation and the use of films showing the surgical procedure. McCaffrey, Colin. (1967). Potentialities for Community Development in a Kekchi Indian Village in British Honduras. Investigators spent six months in the Kekchi Indian village of San Miguel, British Honduras, where data gathering was combined with participation in agricultural and social activities and in practical community development. Respondents (85 men and youths) provided much informal data on attitudes relevant to community development, which were compared with those more rapidly gathered from 126 respondents in other villages. Findings included relative economic isolation and self-sufficiency, a sixty-year history of migration and adaptation, industriousness combined with preference for communal labor, traditional lines of intuitive harmony and consensus in running the relatively new village council, and socioeconomic patterns favorable to experimentation. Literacy in English, a rice-drying floor, and a community center were prominent desires. Recommendations by investigators call for pig pens, rainwater collection or a well and pump, a literate helper for corresponding with government officials, and steps to improve school community relations. An outsider's greatest contribution might be to reassure Kekchis of their competence to develop many projects. (author/ly) ED033321

McCallin, Margaret. (1988). International Catholic Child Bureau Report of a Pilot Study to Assess Levels of Stress in a Sample of 90 Refugee Children in Central America. This pilot study assessed the levels of stress of 90 refugee children aged 7 to 12 years. The countries of origin were El Salvador and Nicaragua; the countries of asylum were Costa Rica, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Parents and teachers assessed each child by means of a questionnaire. Parents completed a second questionnaire which contributed background information about children's experiences. Results indicated a high correlation between teacher and parent assessments. Teachers reported that children exhibited learning problems, and some children exhibited antisocial behavior. Results also indicated that: (1) children exhibited psychosomatic symptoms of stress and a need for reassurance; (2) children who had experienced civil violence had higher levels of stress than children who had not; (3) stress levels increased with family size; (4) some stress-causing factors, such as the experience of civil violence combined with poor living conditions in the country of asylum, had an interactive effect on each other; and (5) children's experience of civil violence over a long period of time had long-term consequences for their development. Nine references are cited. Appendixes include English language versions of the parent and teacher questionnaires, a list of changes made for the English versions of the questionnaires, the background information questionnaire, and presentations of the statistical data from the study. McGinn, Noel F.; And Others. (Jun 1991). Attending School and Learning or Repeating and Leaving. A Study About the Determinants of Grade Repetition and Dropout in Primary School in Honduras. Synthesis of the Study = Asistir Y Aprender O Repetir Y Desertar. Un Estudio Sobre Los Factores Que Contribuyen a La Repitencia En La Escuela Primaria En Honduras. Sintesis Del Informe. This paper synthesizes a study designed to identify the factors that contribute to primary school repetition and dropout in Honduras. Data were collected by record reviews; teacher, student, and parent interviews; and a test of Spanish. The sample included 1,253 students in grades 1 and 3 in 40 schools in rural Honduras. The main findings of the study are: (1) repetition is more prevalent than primary school dropout; (2) repeating doesn't help learning; (3) low socioeconomic background relates to repetition; (4) children who repeat are not treated by teachers the same as those who do not repeat; (5) preschool attendance reduces repetition rates; (6) teachers that promote more students differ from those who have many students who repeat; (7) repeating is not totally a function of the grades given by the teacher; (8) multigrade teachers have more repeaters; (9) students perform better in classes that receive textbooks; (10) teachers who expect success produce it; (11) there is great variability in access to school time; and (12) students who are in school more hours have higher achievement on the Spanish test, and higher final grades. Recommendations for policy intervention are: (1) increasing teacher training; (2) expansion of preschools; (3) streamlining student assessment; (4) establishing a minimum of two teachers in multigrade school; (5) expanding access to effective time in school; (6) not adopting automatic promotion; and (7) carrying out policy studies which yield information to increase the quality of education. Monkman, Karen. (Mar 1997). Transnational or Immigrant Learners: Re-Drawing the Boundaries of Socio-Cultural Context in Understanding Adult Learning. This paper examines the intersection where migration and adult learning converge, exploring how a transnational social context of living relates to adults' formal and informal learning experiences. In-depth life-history interviews were conducted with 29 adults participating in two social networks that link the central coast region of California with several areas in Mexico and an urban area in Honduras. Interviewees ranged in age from early 20s to early 80s and included immigrants to California, adult children of immigrants, and individuals in Mexico whose lives have been touched deeply by the migration of close family members and numerous community members. Interview excerpts form the basis of discussion about adult learning experiences in Mexico, decisions and preparations to migrate, the role of social networks and informal learning in the actual move north, formal education (language and citizenship classes) and informal socially based learning in California, and the formation of identities and lives with multiple dimensions and roots in two countries. The findings suggest that linear models of immigration and acculturation must be replaced with more complex analyses of transnational social relations and their role in adults' lives and learning processes. This Spanish- and Portuguese-language bulletin is a follow-up to No. 15 (PS 030 558), which examined some Effectiveness Initiative (EI) projects. This issue presents some beginning efforts to reflect on what has been learned through EI and to draw conclusions. The articles cover the results of EI projects from such angles as their relations with the community, the keys to success, and the role(s) of the researcher. The final article presents an overview of the EI's results thus far. Following an introduction, the articles are as follows: (1) "New Maps to Effectiveness"; (2) "The 'Effectiveness Initiative' in Mozambique"; (3) "Honduras: 'Mother-Guides' in La Huerta"; (4) "The Philippines: Infant Care and Development as a Central Axis of Community Development"; (5) "Portugal: Reflections on the Agueda Movement and the 'Effectiveness Initiative' Project" (in Portuguese); (6) "India: SEWA: Association of Independent Women Workers"; (7) "Peru: The Role of Encourager: The Complex Connection between PRONOEI (Non-School Programs of Early Education) and the Community"; (8) "Columbia: An Environment of Credibility: Required to Achieve Effectiveness"; (9) "Kenya: From External Researcher to Internal Researcher: An Experience of Giving and Receiving"; and (10) "Companion Article: A New Map of Effectiveness." Moss, Jeffrey W. (Apr 1987). Evaluation of a Panamerican Agricultural Teacher Training Program. During the summer of 1986, two groups of 25 agriculture teachers from Central America participated in 1-month training programs designed to improve their knowledge and use of effective teaching methods, to develop agricultural skills appropriate to Central America, and to provide a thorough understanding of Louisiana agricultural enterprises and culture. The program was conducted at Louisiana State University in cooperation with the Panamerican Agricultural Teacher Training School of Honduras (Zamorano) and sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development. Program evaluation included a needs assessment to identify the participants' perceived needs, evaluation of the relevance of each subject matter presentation, and a final evaluation of the entire training session. Four recommendations can be based on the findings of the program evaluation: (1) needs assessment prior to planning an international training activity is essential; (2) technical agriculture topics should emphasize practical ideas based on the needs assessment, and cooperative extension agents should be used in addition to traditional professors when planning and delivering technical agriculture presentation; (3) instruction through use of qualified interpreters can be effective; and (4) written material should be translated and made available to trainees especially when presentations are made with an interpreter. Moulton, Jeanne. (Jan 1994). Interactive Radio Instruction: Broadening the Definition. Learntech Case Study Series No. 1. Interactive radio instruction has gained attention as a low-cost means of improving the academic achievement of primary school students. The Radio Mathematics Project in Nicaragua and subsequent programs developed by the Learning Technologies for Basic Education (LearnTech) Project illustrate the evolution such programs have undergone as technology and society have changed. The term "interactivity," was used to characterize the simulated conversation of radio broadcasts in which students responded in chorus to questions posed by the radio teacher, but the concept has expanded. Programs started after Radio Mathematics, which was initiated in 1974, have presented new and different challenges. Concepts being taught are more complex, students are expected to apply what they learn outside the classroom, and classroom teachers have a more important role. Such programs as Radio Science, which is taught in Papua New Guinea, have employed new cognitive-learning theories. A new radio program based on constructivist principles is being used in South Africa. Radio projects have pioneered interactive instruction and remain in the vanguard of the application of learning theory to education in the developing countries. (Contains 20 references.) Munroe, Gretel S.; Jones, Gavin W. (Oct 1971). Reports on Population/Family Planning, Number Ten. Mobile Units in Family Planning. Use and effectiveness of mobile units in family planning programs of several foreign countries are surveyed in this demographic report. Services and education provided by mobile unit programs in Tunisia, the United Arab Republic, Honduras, South Korea, Turkey, and Pakistan are examined. Assessed are the various roles mobile units play, their functions, geographic coverage, continuity of care, types of vehicles, methods of operation, personnel, costs, and program strengths and weaknesses. Comparisons among programs in different countries are made where possible. Systematic analysis of cost-effectiveness of the programs is provided in statistical and narrative form. Several tables indicate team performance for the various countries and include raw data for individual teams as well as median figures for all units within the country. Information was obtained primarily from questionnaires distributed by the Population Council in November, 1967. (BL) ED056898
